The Current State of Men’s Health
I’m sure we’re aware that everybody's mental and physical health has been challenged by the lockdowns and insecurities of the last year. There will be further challenges as we return to ‘normal’ with many lives having changed beyond recognition.
In particular men’s mental health is a cause for concern. Even pre pandemic there was a grave disparity in the high number of men who die from suicide; 4 in every 5 suicides are by men, yet mental illness diagnoses are lower than for women. A low number of men actually seek treatment for depression, anxiety and other mental health challenges.
Harvard Medical School reports that men die younger than women and they are more burdened by illness during life. They are also more likely to fall ill at a younger age and have more chronic illnesses than women.
Nutrition is a really important tool to use to approach not only our physical health but mental health too. After all, what we eat affects the health and function of our brain. Additionally, if we’re under stress, which many people are, both cognitive and immune function are compromised.
Being more aware of what we eat and making healthier food choices is going to strengthen brain power, increase immunity and reduce the risk of chronic disease such as COVID-19.
